Thailand will negotiate with the U.S. on tariffs, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said onThursday, after U.S. President Trump announced sweeping new import duties affecting multiple countries. Meanwhile, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat noted that while the government expected some tariffs, the 36% rate was higher than anticipated. Leading up to the announcement, Thailand had adopted a wait-and-see approach but pledged to increase imports of U.S. energy and food products to help reduce its trade surplus. The U.S. is Thailand’s largest export market, with key shipments including electronics, machinery, and agricultural goods. Thailand is also listed among the “Dirty 15” countries that could be heavily impacted by the new tariffs. Currently, the U.S. imposes an average 2% tariff on Thai imports, while Thailand maintains an 8% tariff on American goods.
